Abilene, KS. . . If so look in your attic, in "Fibber McGee's Closet," under the bed, or wherever you hide your relics from the "Nifty Fifties." We understand why you have never been able to part with them. They may have been the first new and modern things you owned, or the things with which you set up housekeeping. Perhaps they belonged to your mom or grandma. They deserve better, but what could you do? Most people just wrapped them in newspaper, and tucked them away with the thought that maybe they will come back in style someday.
But, we have a better idea. You can be represented in the Eisenhower Museum. Send us a photograph of your treasures, and they may be chosen to be featured in the museum's new Presidential Gallery! The exhibit will feature a typical 50s living room, a basement fallout shelter, and a Duckwall's Variety Store window where your treasure might find a permanent home.
The Eisenhower Foundations has issued a call for anyone interested to send a photograph of items to be considered for use in the museum exhibits. The exhibit will be a permanent part of the Eisenhower Museum, and all items must be donated. No loans will be considered.
The living room requires furniture, drapes, and all items that are normally found is a living room; the store front needs whatever you might see on the shelves of a variety store, including small household goods, small kitchen items, toys, and odds and ends; the fallout shelter needs survival type equipment, flashlights, a Geiger counter, and personal items that you would take into the shelter for your "comfort." All items must be from the 1950s.
Send your clear color photographs to The Eisenhower Foundation, P.O. Box 295, Abilene, Kansas. Photos will not be returned. Owners of items that are chosen for use in the new museum will be given a free season pass to the Eisenhower Museum and other recognition. If you have questions, you may call the Eisenhower Center at 785 263 4751, or toll free 1 877 746 4453.
